Background of the Study
As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated and widespread, the need for advanced cybersecurity measures is critical to protecting national security. Traditional encryption techniques, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems are no longer sufficient to counter emerging cyber-attacks, especially as quantum computing technologies begin to make significant strides. Quantum computing offers the potential to strengthen national cyber defense by enabling faster threat detection, real-time encryption, and the development of unbreakable security protocols through quantum cryptography.
The Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA), based in Kaduna State, serves as a critical institution for training the country's military personnel. As the NDA is increasingly reliant on digital systems for research, communication, and defense operations, ensuring the security of these systems is paramount. This study will explore the potential applications of quantum computing in enhancing national cyber defense strategies at the NDA, including how quantum algorithms and cryptography can help safeguard military and government data from evolving cyber threats.
Statement of the Problem
Current cybersecurity measures used by military and defense institutions in Nigeria are under constant threat from cyber-attacks, including hacking, espionage, and data breaches. As cyber attackers evolve their tactics and quantum computing capabilities improve, the existing defense mechanisms may not be sufficient. The integration of quantum computing into the national cybersecurity strategy could provide advanced tools to defend against these new threats. This research will explore how quantum computing can strengthen national cyber defense strategies at the NDA.
Objectives of the Study
To investigate how quantum computing can be applied to enhance national cybersecurity at the Nigeria Defence Academy.
To assess the potential role of quantum cryptography in securing military and defense communications.
To evaluate the challenges and opportunities of adopting quantum computing in the defense sector’s cybersecurity strategy.
Research Questions
How can quantum computing improve national cyber defense strategies at the Nigeria Defence Academy?
What role can quantum cryptography play in securing military and defense communications?
What challenges exist in integrating quantum computing into the cybersecurity measures of the Nigeria Defence Academy?
Significance of the Study
This study will provide critical insights into how quantum computing can be integrated into national cyber defense strategies, with a focus on enhancing the security of military and defense systems. It could inform policy recommendations and help safeguard Nigeria’s digital infrastructure against emerging threats.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the application of quantum computing for cybersecurity within the Nigeria Defence Academy. It will not extend to other government agencies or sectors beyond the defense industry.
